I've always wondered where Salman Khan got that weird American accent from and I've always wondered why directors don't insist he lose it when he's acting for the camera. But I think I may have got my answer this week. Perhaps that funny accent of his was part of the preparation for his career's most stupid role, the one he plays in the English-language film Marigold which releases this weekend.

Bollywood Film "Marigold" : Song and Dance

A B-grade Hollywood actress meets a Bollywood choreographer and sparks fly. Or rather, sparks are meant to fly but alas, they don't. Touted as Salman Khan's ticket to Hollywood, Marigold is a huge disappointment.

Khan (shirt intact this time) plays the quintessential good guy, and it's an uncomplicated role which does not require him to exert himself in the least. All he has to do is dance a bit and smile a lot. Khan as a dancer/choreographer is also a stretch (even though he is energetic his dancing is no great shakes) but to his credit he does make a valiant attempt in the song sequences. American fashion model turned actress Ali Larter (best known for her popular television series Heroes) has a meatier role and delivers a spunky and likeable performance.

Salman plays lead opposite her as he helps her way out in the film world and finally winning her heart out. Nandana Sen, Vikas Bhalla, Kiran Juneja and foreign actor Ian Bohen play important character roles. 'Marigold' has been shot exclusively on the exotic locations of Goa and the film is poised to be an engrossing love triangle. Shankar Ehsaan Loy delivers a cross culture feel in their versatile musical work. American R n B singer "Truth Hurts" plays the pivotal role in the album as she sings melodiously significant soundtracks of the film. Javed Akhtar's poetic abilities make this album a pleasant affair and it could be felt in its mesmerizing soundtracks. Insipid, clichéd and tiredly pretentious, these words best fit this much touted ‘Salman Khan’s first Hollywood film.’ There may be many other words that describe the film but they are best avoided as most would be expletives.

Yes, the movie is that bad. Not only is the screenplay watery, the acting, casting, dialogues, music and costumes all make you wonder if the makers were planning to make the movie run on hype and publicity alone? But for the sake of the art that cinema is considered; let us give these aspects and the movie a deeper look.
