Salman Khan: Bollywood star gets bail in poaching case

An Indian court on Friday granted bail to top Bollywood actor Salman Khan pending his appeal against a conviction for poaching protected wildlife, paving the way for his release from prison.

The 41-year-old star was sent to jail last week after a court threw out an appeal by the actor against his conviction, under which has to serve a five-year prison term.

"The court has accepted his bail plea," Khan's lawyer told reporters in western Jodhpur city

Salman Khan was granted bail nearly a week after he was sent to jail in connection with the Chinkara poaching case.

The court, while hearing the revision petition along with bail application filed by the actor, ordered his release on a security of Rs 1 lakh and a bond of Rs 50,000.

Salman to spend at least 2 more nights in jail

Bollywood actor Salman Khan will now have to spend at least two more nights at the central jail here as the Rajasthan High Court on Monday has deferred the hearing of his revision and bail plea till Wednesday.

Salman’s counsel had presented his petition before the court, pleading that it be heard on Monday itself. The court, however, said it would hear his petition August 29.

“The court can call for records on Wednesday or grant him bail,” said Mahipal Bishnoi, counsel for the Bishnoi community, who consider the deer a sacred animal and had launched protests against Salman. If the court calls for records from the lower courts, then the case can go on till September 3, he added.

Bollywood's big bucks riding on Salman

Bollywood's bad boy number two's jail term in the Black Buck poaching case could cost Bollywood big bucks.

With the Jodhpur court cancelling his appeal against conviction by a lower court almost Rs 70-100 crores rising on the star could be stuck.

With a possible six-year jail term staring at him, Salman's films may not have a happy ending.

His films which are complete or close to completion are Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Saawariya made at a whopping budget of Rs 35 crore and is due for a Diwali release.

Bollywood Actor : Salman gets five-year jail term

Upholding the lower court’s verdict in the chinkara poaching case, a Jodhpur court today sentenced Bollywood actor Salman Khan to five years of imprisonment in the nine-year-old black buck poaching case.
The district and sessions court turned down Khan’s appeal against his conviction in the poaching case, awarded to him by a lower court last year. Another accused, Govardhan Singh, was, however, acquitted.
