Screening of Jodhaa Akbar protested
The much-talked about and controversial film Jodhaa Akbar, after registering widespread protests in Rajasthan and Gujarat, saw angry people demonstrating against it at Bhopal theaters today. Organisations linked to the Rajput samaj entered the premises of Jyoti and Sargam theaters in the State capital and set the film posters on fire demanding stopping of screening of the film immediately.
Sensing the situation the owners of the theaters decided to cancel the first show of the film. However, these theaters screened the later shows of the film as per the time schedule. The demonstrators burnt the posters of the film whioch they had brought. As a precautionary measure, the administration had posted strong police force at these theaters right from the morning. This prevented the agitators from resorting to much damage.
The General Secretary of the Rajput Samaj, Deepak Chouhan said that the film had hurt the sentiments of a large section of the samaj. The film is a distortion of historical truth and needs to be banned immediately.
Meanwhile, screening of Bollywood movie Jodhaa Akbar has been stopped in multiplexes across Ahmedabad following protests by the Rajput community.
A group of people also vandalised a single-screen cinema hall in Naroda area of the city on Sunday which was screening the movie, police said.
"Most of the multiplexes have temporarily stopped screening of Jodhaa Akbar after a group of around 25 persons came to all the multiplexes and warned against screening the film," Manubhai Patel, President of Multiplexs Owners' Association of Gujarat said.
"We are trying to convince the people of Rajput community to allow us to screen the movie," he added.
Meanwhile, a group of around 25 people broke glass doors, windows and furniture of Galaxy Cinema Hall on Sunday, police said.
Police brought the rampage under control by mild lathicharge, officials said, adding that they have detained three people.
The police were not aware of the political or social affiliations of the group which attacked the cinema hall.
This is the first such attack on the cinema hall screening of the controversial film Jodhaa Akbar in Gujarat. The film has not been allowed to be screened in Rajastahan following protest by Rajput groups.
The VHP had on Saturday backed the Rajput community in their protest against the film. VHP leader Pravin Togadia said that Rajput community is justified in opposing the screening because it had "distrocted" facts.
Meanwhile, reports coming from Surat said that the Rajput community members had protested against the screening of Jodhaa Akbar in front of a Kinnari cinema hall.
The film is being screened in the presence of heavy police bandobast in most of the cinema halls and multiplexes in Surat.
The Rajput community members have warned that if the screening of the film is not stopped by Monday then they will intensify their protests.
